MOSCOW, July 12 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Foreign Ministry called on the UN Wednesday to assist India in countering terrorism in the wake of a series of devastating attacks on civilians in the country.
Over 180 people were killed on Tuesday and more than 400 wounded in terrorist attacks that hit railway stations in the city of Mumbai and the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
Mikhail Kamynin, the Foreign Ministry's official spokesman, said: "Russia, along with other UN Security Council members, wants just punishment for the organizers and sponsors of these monstrous acts," and calls on all UN countries to cooperate with India in fighting terrorism."
Kamynin said Russian President Vladimir Putin had sent a wire to India's president and prime minister, condemning the acts and expressing his condolences.
The UN Security Council is expected to make an official statement on the issue Wednesday, the ministry spokesman said.
