MOSCOW, July 20 (RIA Novosti) - A self-made explosive device went off near a major highway in northern Moscow Thursday evening, a police source said.
"Police officers at the scene found wires from an explosive device and explosive substances," the source said.
No casualties have been reported.
Earlier reports said a residential gas pipe had exploded near Leningradskoye Shosse. But traces of small metal balls, probably used to fill an explosive device, were discovered on a car parked nearby.
The Emergency Situations Ministry said the explosion, which occurred at 8:15 p.m. Moscow time (4:15 p.m. GMT), had disrupted gas supplies to an apartment block.
"[The explosion] occurred near an eight-storey building; windows on the first and second floors were shattered," a ministry spokesman said. "Gas supplies were disrupted, but will be restored by about midnight. The cause of the explosion is being investigated."
