KIEV, August 16 (RIA Novosti) - An Italian man and his Russian wife have been detained on suspicion of attempting to smuggle gold jewelry weighing 2.5 kilograms (5.5lb) from Ukraine into Russia in a Volkswagen, the Ukrainian border service said Wednesday.
The couple, whose car was searched at a border checkpoint in Ukraine's Kharkov Region, were found to be in possession of 153 undeclared gold jewelry items, old coins and banknotes, 18 silverware sets, and 108 cutlery items.
The border service said in a statement, "The circumstances are still being investigated, and experts will valuate the jewelry."
Ukrainian border guards also detained a Ukrainian national in the Luhansk Region for allegedly attempting to smuggle $1.94 million into Russia in a Subaru car. Officers said they had found the cash hidden in a container behind the back seat.
