MOSCOW, August 20 (RIA Novosti) - About 200 police and interior troops have been killed in the past four years in the Republic of Dagestan in Russia's North Caucasus, the Russian interior minister said Sunday.

"In the past four years, about 200 police and interior troops have been killed. In 2005 alone, there were more than 100 attempts on their life, 60 of them were killed and more than 120 wounded," said Rashid Nurgaliyev, who is on a working trip to Dagestan.

Nurgaliyev praised the work of the Dagestani interior bodies in their fight against criminal gangs and terrorist groups in the republic.

"Despite considerable objective difficulties, the Dagestani interior personnel have largely managed to neutralize with their courage and professionalism criminal groups and terrorist groups operating in the republic," Nurgaliyev said.

Russia's interior minister said the Dagestani interior bodies had been able to prevent dozens of terrorist acts, find and destroy a large number of arms caches and ammunition on the territory of the republic.
