MOSCOW, September 24 (RIA Novosti) - A man from the North Caucasus republic of Daghestan was attacked in Moscow Saturday night, a police official said Sunday.
The source said several people armed with baseball bats had beaten the 38-year-old and taken away his possessions.
The Daghestani man is now in hospital, he said.
The motives behind the attack remain unclear, but it may well be racially motivated given the recent upsurge in xenophobia and hate crimes in Russia, with migrants from Central Asia and the Caucasus among the most common targets.
A wave of protests against migration swept across the country earlier this month after two Russians were killed in a restaurant fight in the northern town of Kondopoga. The killings are blamed on Chechen migrants.
