MOSCOW/TBILISI, September 27 (RIA Novosti) - The commander of trilateral peacekeeping forces in a conflict zone in Georgia has strongly denied a media report Wednesday that Russian troops under his authority had destroyed a house in a village.

Rustavi-2 TV reported that Russian peacekeepers in the zone of Georgia's conflict with breakaway South Ossetia had brought a mechanized infantry combat vehicle into the village of Eredvi and destroyed a derelict building formerly occupied by Georgian peacekeepers.

But Major General Marat Kulakhmetov told RIA Novosti on the phone, "Such statements are absurd, I don't even want to comment on them."

Kulakhmetov commands the Joint Peacekeeping Forces, which also include Georgian and South Ossetian troops.

Eredvi administration head Alexander Maisuradze said earlier that when he had asked the Russians why they wanted to demolish the building, they responded that they needed construction materials and were fulfilling an order from their command.

Rustavi said Georgian peacekeepers were clarifying the situation at the scene.
