MOSCOW, October 1 (RIA Novosti) - Russian tennis player Anna Chakvetadze won her first WTA singles title Sunday at the Guangzhou International Women's Open in China.
Nineteen-year-old Chakvetadze, seeded No.3 for the tournament, defeated No.4-seed Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain 6-1, 6-4 in the final.
On her way to the final, Chakvetadze, who is currently 26th in the WTA rankings, beat top-seed Jelena Jankovic (Serbia), who retired in the semifinal second set due to heat illness after losing 5-7 in the first.
Chakvetadze's previous career bests were the semifinals in Warsaw (Poland) and Montreal (Canada) in 2006, and in New Haven (U.S.) in 2005.
