MOSCOW, October 16 (RIA Novosti) - Fourteen cadets and officers remain in hospital, one in a serious condition, after a drunk driver ploughed at high speed into a group of paratroopers in central Russia on Saturday night, killing six of them and injuring 19, an Airborne Forces spokesman said.

The VAZ-2105 (Lada) car hurtled into the group of 200 cadets of an airborne academy in the city of Ryazan, 120 miles southeast of Moscow. Police said the 21-year-old driver had no driving license.

"One cadet remains in a serious condition," Colonel Alexander Cherednik said. The military student was hospitalized with brain concussion and two broken legs.

He said nine of those hospitalized are in a stable condition, and four are in good condition.

The colonel said the driver of the car and five passengers, who were also drunk, were caught by police trying to flee the scene of the carnage.

The marching cadets, who were returning to their college, were in a 200-strong convoy. They were wearing reflective clothing and carrying torches.

Prosecutors have launched criminal proceedings into the incident. If found guilty, the driver faces up to seven years in prison.

A total of 11,500 people, including 462 children, died in accidents on Russia's roads in the first half of 2006, according to Interior Ministry data. Some 110,800 people were also injured in road traffic accidents in January-June, of whom around one tenth were children.
