The Russian experts working on a contract to restore a local thermal power generating plant near Basra were injured when a mortar round exploded late Friday, November 3.
"The injured specialists are receiving medical aid," the Russian Foreign Ministry said. "Our embassy officials are in touch with them and said their life is out of danger."
The ministry said the round had crashed into the plant where the Russians were working by accident.
"The attack was reportedly targeted at the British military contingent of the multi-national force in Iraq," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
The ministry said the injured Russians would be flown to Moscow via Dubai Sunday, and called for tighter security measures in Iraq.
"We expect the Iraqi security structures and the commanders of the Multi-National Force to do everything necessary to ensure there is no threat to the lives of foreign specialists helping to restore economic infrastructure for the Iraqi people," the ministry said.
This is the second incident involving Russian citizens in Iraq in the past few months. On June 3, a Russian Embassy employee was shot in an attack on a car, and four others were abducted and executed later by an al-Qaeda linked group.
