Ex-Defense Minister Igor Sergeyev dead at 68

MOSCOW, November 10 (RIA Novosti) - Marshal Igor Sergeyev, a former Russian defense minister, has died in Moscow at age 68 after a long illness, Russia's incumbent defense minister said Friday.

Marshal Sergeyev was defense minister under Boris Yeltsin from May 1997 through March 2001. Between 2001 and 2004 he served as President Putin's adviser on matters of strategic stability.

"Marshal Igor Sergeyev died today at 11:15 a.m. Moscow time [8:15 a.m. GMT]," Sergei Ivanov said.

The Russian Defense Ministry said Igor Sergeyev had been treated for leukemia for the past three and a half years.
