* Russian boxer Oleg Maskaev retained his World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight title, defeating Uganda's Peter Okhello on points in a unanimous decision (120-107, 118-109, 120-107) in the first-ever world title fight in Russia

* At the European Short Course Swimming Championship in Helsinki, Finland (ended December 10):

- Arkady Vyatchanin won gold in the men's 100-meter backstroke in 51.11 seconds. Helge Meeuw (Germany) took silver in 51.16 seconds, and his teammate Thomas Rupprath finished third in 52.02 seconds

- Anastasia Ivanenko won bronze in the women's 400-meter medley in 4:33.46. Alessia Filippi (Italy) won gold in 4:31.58, and Katarzyna Baranowska (Poland) took silver in 4:32.78.

* At the Biathlon World Cup tournament's 2nd round in Hochfilzen, Austria (ended December 10)

- Russia won gold in the 4x6-km women's relay in 1h 18 min 24.7 sec (penalty loops - 0). Germany won silver in 1:18:25.4 (1), and Norway took bronze in 1:20:15.1 (0)

- Russia won gold in the 4x7.5-kilometer men's relay in 1:25:18.4 (0). Germany won silver in 1:25:51.2 (0), and France took bronze in 1:26:21.5 (0)

- Dmitry Yaroshenko and Ivan Tcherezov won silver and bronze, respectively, in the 12.5-kilometer men's pursuit. Ole Einar Bjoerndalen (Norway) won gold.

* At the Women's European Handball Championship in Sweden (through December 17):

Russia beat Sweden 30:15 and Ukraine 40:32 to take first place in preliminary Group C.
