MOSCOW, December 20 (RIA Novosti) - Gazprom [RTS: GAZP] has signed a memorandum on mutual understanding with Serbia, expressing the sides' interest in the construction of a new natural gas pipeline through the Balkan country's territory, the Russian energy giant said Wednesday.

"The implementation of these agreements provides an opportunity to build alternative gas transportation facilities to ensure stable and reliable gas supplies to European countries, and gives Serbia the status of a transit country," Gazprom said.

The memorandum was signed by Gazprom's general director for exports, Alexander Medvedev, Serbian Minister of Energy and Mining Radomir Naumov, and the general director of Serbia's state-run Srbijagas, Milos Milankovic.
