MAKHACHKALA, January 14 (RIA Novosti) - A police officer was killed in the Republic of Dagestan in Russia's troubled North Caucasus region, the regional law-enforcement bodies said Sunday.
The incident occurred Saturday morning on the edge of the village of Aimaumakhi in the Sergokalinsky district when unidentified persons opened automatic fire at the policeman's car, the law-enforcement bodies said.
"The police officer died at the scene from wounds and his service pistol was stolen," the law-enforcement bodies said.
The attackers fled in a Zhiguli car, the law-enforcement bodies said.
The police found 98 cartridges of various calibers at the scene of the attack, the law-enforcement bodies said.
A criminal investigation has been launched into the assault, the law-enforcement bodies said.
