Azerbaijani opposition protests rate hikes

BAKU, January 28 (RIA Novosti) - The Musavat opposition party held an authorized rally in the capital of Azerbaijan Sunday to protest over rising energy and public utility rates.

Azerbaijan's government raised domestic prices for gasoline, diesel fuel, gas, electricity and water, and transport fares in Baku in January after announcing it would not buy Russia's natural gas this year at $235 per 1,000 cubic meters, more than double the rate it paid last year.

About 2,000 people participated in the rally to demand that the government cancel its decision on price hikes, take measures to raise the standard of living and overcome stratification in society.
