Russia condemns Tuesday's terrorist attacks in Lebanon and calls on Lebanese political forces to resist being provoked, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement Tuesday.
MOSCOW, February 13 (RIA Novosti) - Russia condemns Tuesday's terrorist attacks in Lebanon and calls on Lebanese political forces to resist being provoked, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement Tuesday.

Explosions destroyed two buses Tuesday north of Beirut, the Lebanese capital, killing at least three and wounding over 20, according to Lebanese authorities.

"We resolutely condemn this new and very dangerous terrorist attack in Lebanon that took place after a series of assassinations in the country," the ministry said. "Russia has repeatedly stated, including at the UN Security Council, its firm and principled opposition to such criminal actions, whose perpetrators should be found and deservedly punished."

Lebanon, divided between the largely pro-Syrian Muslim Shiite majority led by the Islamist group Hezbollah and the Christian minority opposed to Syrian influence, survived a 15-year civil war that ended in 1990.

Last summer, the country was devastated by Israeli air strikes during the Israeli Defense Force's campaign against Hezbollah, while Hezbollah-inspired mass rallies at the end of the year demanding the government's resignation left scores dead and injured.

"Obviously the organizers of today's terrorist attacks are trying to destabilize the situation further, to frustrate efforts at normalization and to exacerbate internal discord," the ministry said.

"We hope that all political forces in Lebanon will resist being provoked, will show self-restrain and remain calm. It is now more important than ever to resume an internal dialogue aimed at resolving existing contradictions within the constitutional framework and to restore national accord," the statement said.

Today's terrorist attacks came a day before the second anniversary of former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri's assassination in Lebanon.

Hariri was one of five high-ranking Lebanese figures to be murdered over the past two years, including Lebanese Christian Cabinet minister Pierre Gemayel last November.
