Ukraine's outspoken former prime minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, said Wednesday intermediaries in energy relations with Russia were a threat to national security.
KIEV, February 14 (RIA Novosti) -- Ukraine's outspoken former prime minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, said Wednesday intermediaries in energy relations with Russia were a threat to national security.

Tymoshenko's statement was an apparent reference to the RosUkrEnergo company, a sole supplier of Russian and cheaper Central Asian gas to Ukraine. The company, where Russian energy giant Gazprom [RTS: GAZP] owns 50%, was set up following a gas spat between the two neighbors early last year.

The princess of the "orange revolution", Tymoshenko said RosUkrEnergo threatens national energy security and added her eponymous opposition bloc will submit proposals concerning the country's energy security at an upcoming session of the National Security and Defense Council.

"We are preparing documents for the NSDC, proving that this company jeopardizes energy security," she said.

Tymoshenko said Ukraine and Russia do not need any intermediaries on the natural gas market.

"It would not be a bad idea if the two countries - Ukraine and Russia - eliminated all competitors by joining forces and making a coordinated decision," she said, adding it is crucial to provide cheaper gas to Ukraine.

Under a deal signed in late October, RosUkrEnergo is to supply Ukraine with at least 55 billion cubic meters of gas from Central Asia in 2007 for the price of $130 per 1,000 cubic meters. The supplies are expected to cover the country's gas needs in full.
