"The Moscow City Prosecutor's Office filed a statement with the Moscow City Court in early March demanding the National Bolshevik Party be recognized as extremist and its activities outlawed," the Prosecutor General's Office said. "The organization's activities should be suspended pending a court ruling."
Prosecutors appear to be seeking to toughen an earlier ban imposed in 2005 after the National Bolsheviks took part in an unsanctioned rally in St. Petersburg in early March, when hundreds of opposition supporters broke through police cordons and blocked traffic in the city center, protesting against a clampdown on liberal freedoms.
The Bolsheviks, led by ultranationalist writer Eduard Limonov, have continued activities largely targeted against President Vladimir Putin and his government despite the ban.
"Repeated warnings [to the party] provide sufficient grounds for declaring the organization extremist and banning its activities," prosecutors said.
