CAIRO, April 18 (RIA Novosti) - At least 18 school students were killed when a minibus they were riding in collided with a truck near the Egyptian capital early Wednesday.
Egypt's Interior Ministry said preliminary reports indicated the truck had crossed the median line on a highway near Gizah, some 20 kilometers (12 miles) southwest of central Cairo, and ran into the minibus, which overturned. Survivors were taken to the hospital.
Traffic accidents are common in Egypt, where 6,000 people died and over 30,000 were injured in crashes last year.
Experts cite a failure to observe traffic rules and the generally poor condition of cars as the main reasons behind crashes. Authorities have launched a campaign to reduce road deaths.
