MOSCOW, May 20 (RIA Novosti) - Romania's President Traian Basescu survived a referendum on his impeachment Saturday, official results showed Sunday.
Voting results from more than 90% of the country's polling stations showed that an overwhelming majority of Romanian voters did not want the president to be ousted from office.
Basescu, who has been locked in a power struggle with Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu and legislators, was suspended from office by parliament last month for alleged power abuse. However, the president denied the charge.
Commenting on exit-poll results Saturday, Basescu, who had pushed for anti-graft reforms in Romania, said he had received a million votes more at the referendum than at the 2004 presidential elections.
