Rakhat Aliyev, 44, the husband of President Nursultan Nazarbayev's eldest daughter, has been arrested at Kazakhstan's request, Ekho Moskvy said. Kazakh authorities said Aliyev abducted in February two top managers of the country's leading bank, Nurbank, in which he is a shareholder.
Aliyev, who co-owns with his wife Kazakhstan's leading media outlets, is also accused of extortion and illegal acquisition of land and property.
Kazakh law enforcement bodies have declined to comment on Aliyev's detention in Vienna. "We have no such information yet," an Interior Ministry official said.
But Gerald Hesztera, a spokesman for Austria's Federal Criminal Investigations Bureau, confirmed the media reports. "He was detained after visiting a barbershop and was immediately taken to the Land Court of Vienna," he said, adding that the decision was made by Austrian prosecutors working on Aliyev's extradition.
President Nazarbayev dismissed Aliyev from the post of Austrian ambassador and of special envoy to Europe's largest security organization, the OSCE, Saturday.
