Chechen sentenced to life for 13 murders

MOSCOW, June 4 (RIA Novosti) - Chechnya's Supreme Court sentenced a Chechen man to life imprisonment for 13 murders, including the killing in 2001 of a deputy prosecutor from Grozny, Russian prosecutors said Monday.

The Russian Prosecutor General's Office said on its Web site that Arsan Mukayev was convicted of being a member of an armed group, attempted murder of law enforcement officers, murder, including ethnically motivated killings, robbery, and illegal possession of weapons. The crimes occurred in the North Caucasus republic of Chechnya.

"The Supreme Court of the Chechen Republic sentenced Arsan Mukayev to life in prison in a high-security correctional colony and fined him 50,000 rubles ($1,930)," the prosecutor's office statement reads.
