MOSCOW, June 6 (RIA Novosti) - A German man who jumped a security barrier into Pope Benedict XVI's open 'popemobile' during a public audience on St. Peter's Square was overpowered by security guards Wednesday and sent to a mental hospital, the Vatican press service said.
Federico Lombardi, the Vatican chief spokesman, said the "mentally unbalanced" 27-year-old German who tried to get into the popemobile "did not attempt to take the Pontiff's life," but was nonetheless sent to a mental hospital in Rome for examination.
The Pope was not harmed and seemed not to have even noticed when the man jumped in behind him, as he was busy waving and blessing the crowd of 40,000. He holds weekly audiences at the same time and place.
