BEIJING, June 7 (RIA Novosti) - Craftsmen in southwestern China have produced a wooden screen fan weighing about a hundred kilos (220 pounds), the official Xinhua news agency said Thursday.
An example of the centuries-old Rongchang tradition, the giant fan will be displayed to the public in the city of Chongqing June 18, the day marking a decade since this booming Yangtze outpost was granted municipality status.
The fan consists of 29 slats, each 3.14 meters (10 feet) long. They have been carved to depict the city's map in an unfolded position.
At the June 18 presentation, master painters will decorate the piece with landscapes and calligraphic inscriptions.
