GROZNY, June 20 (RIA Novosti) - Four servicemen and one police officer were killed Wednesday in a shootout in central Grozny, a high-ranking source in the law enforcement agencies of the North Caucasus republic of Chechnya said.
"An OMON special purpose police detachment and traffic officers, as well as servicemen from the Russian Defense Ministry's Zapad battalion were involved in the clash," the source said.
The source said the servicemen and policeman died after shooting started when a vehicle containing servicemen was stopped by police for a routine check in the Chechen capital. According to one version, the police demanded that tinted film be removed from the vehicle's windows, which initiated the shooting.
An investigation into the incident, which is reported to have involved up to 15 people, is underway.
