MOSCOW, June 24 (RIA Novosti) - Britain's departing Prime Minister Tony Blair planned to scupper political career of his bitter rival, Gordon Brown, after the last election two years ago, a leading U.K. daily newspaper said Sunday.

The 56-year-old Chancellor of the Exchequer replaces Tony Blair as leader of the governing New Labor Party on Sunday, before he is scheduled to take over as British prime minister on June 27.

A confidential document disclosed by The Independent is reported to contain evidence that Blair planned to dismiss Brown from his post as Treasury chief in 2005 and sought a new candidacy that would allow the premier to strengthen his grip on the domestic agenda.

The document allegedly proves earlier suspicions by Gordon's supporters that Blair was trying to undermine his career and break up the Treasury for several years, assigning many of its functions to other ministries.

British media already reported last week that the prime minister's spouse, Cherie Blair, "repeatedly urged her husband to sack Brown."

The paper said the disclosed document is in striking contrast with Blair's praise of the Treasury chief he voiced recently at a government meeting and his pledge to support the new Cabinet head.

"The exclusive report reveals an extraordinary breakdown at the heart of government," the Independent said.
