MADRID, June 25 (RIA Novosti) - Thousands of passengers have been stranded at an international airport in Madrid as flight crews of Spain's second-largest air carrier, Spanair, went on strike Monday, cancelling 60 flights.

A spokesman for the Sitcpla labor union, which initiated the strike, said the flight crews were protesting long working hours, staff shortages and low wages.

"If the demands of our labor union are not met, we will stage several more 24-hour strikes in July, at the height of the tourist season," the spokesman said.

He added that 60 flights, including local and international, had been delayed and that passengers who missed their flights were advised to return their tickets and fly with other airlines.

Spanair belong to the Swedish SAS air company and is the second-largest air carrier in the country after Iberia.
