A senior Russian delegate, Leonid Slutsky, said London-based Chechen emissary Akhmed Zakayev, wanted in Russia on terrorism charges, had been seen in the Palace of Europe in Strasbourg during the current summer session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
"The Russian delegation has submitted an official request to the prefecture for the Department of Bas-Rhin (Lower Rhine) about Akhmed Zakayev being on French territory, as he is on Interpol's wanted list," Slutsky said.
He also said Zakayev, who has political refugee status in Britain, had not taken the floor during the session, but was giving numerous press interviews.
Slutsky said that now that Britain has a new premier, Gordon Brown, Russia would try once again to secure Zakayev's extradition from the U.K.
