Russia stops attempt to import expired Brazilian pork as sprats

MOSCOW, July 5 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's food safety watchdog has prevented the import of expired Brazilian pork disguised as sprats, the regulator said in a press release Thursday.

"Rosselkhoznadzor experts in the Smolensk Region [in western Russia] stopped a truck from Kaliningrad," the source said. "A check revealed cardboard boxes marked SIF 3548 BRAZIL with 01.2006 as the date of manufacture and 01.2007 as the expiry date."

The watchdog said the consignment note mentioned "frozen sprats for feeding fur-bearing animals," while the truck was actually carrying 25 metric tons of pork.
