MOSCOW, July 6 (RIA Novosti) - Shortly after Russia's resort city of Sochi was chosen to host the 2014 Winter Olympics, the governor of St. Petersburg promised Friday that Russia's second-largest city would bid for the 2020 Summer Olympics.
"We have no chance of hosting the 2016 games, as there is an order of continents," Valentina Matviyenko said in an interview with Ekho Moskvy radio. "But we will definitely bid for the next [2020] Olympics, will prepare infrastructure and will definitely host the Olympic Games."
St. Petersburg previously bid for the 2004 Summer Olympics, but was not one of the five finalists and the games were subsequently held in Athens, Greece.
