MADRID, July 9 (RIA Novosti) - A Russian national detained in Madrid Sunday, on suspicion of stabbing and causing serious injuries to an African, has been sent to a psychiatric hospital, a police spokesman said Monday.
"Rustam Gadayev, born in Karaganda in 1981, has been sent to a clinic for a diminished responsibility psychiatric assessment," the policeman said, adding that the Russian, who has refugee status in Spain, had already been detained by police earlier for extortion.
Earlier Monday, a police source said Gadayev was probably mentally ill as he "explained to the investigator that he carried out the attack on the African, who was previously unknown to him, after hearing a call from above to kill someone."
Police said the Russian was detained after inflicting knife wounds to 30-year-old Yaya Diakita, whose condition is serious, but doctors say his life is out of danger.
