ROME, July 21 (RIA Novosti) - Italian police said Saturday they had discovered and broke up an al-Qaeda militant cell in central Italy that had set up an authentic terrorist training camp in a mosque.
"I can confirm that this [terrorist] cell held training courses on weapons handling, explosives and terrorist tactics," a counter-terrorism police source said.
Police said four Moroccans and the imam of the local mosque had been arrested in a sting operation in the central city of Perugia.
The "terrorist school" had been used to train militants who were later sent to other al-Qaeda cells in Italy, police said.
