Iranian and American ambassadors met in Baghdad Tuesday in a second round of talks to discuss the situation in Iraq. The three sides agreed to set up a subcommittee on Iraqi security, and the negotiations continued between experts Wednesday.
Manouchehr Mottaki said Iran might consider consultations between deputy foreign ministers "if the United States files an official request." He also denied U.S. accusations that Iran supported Iraqi militants and said his country wanted peace and security for Iraq.
The first round of official negotiations between Tehran and Washington took place in late May for the first time in 27 years, and focused on the situation in Iraq and on the release of Iranian diplomats seized by the U.S. in January in Iraq on suspicion of collaborating with Iraqi militants. Both issues remain on the agenda.
