Narcotics police seize 60 kg of heroin in Moscow

MOSCOW, August 10 (RIA Novosti) - About 60 kilograms (132 pounds) of heroin with a street value of $1 million were seized in Russia's capital by drug officers Friday, the country's anti-drugs agency said.

"As a result of a special two-stage operation a trafficker was detained with 2.5 kilograms [5.5 pounds] of heroin. Later a car heading toward the city was stopped with carrying 57 kilograms [125.4 pounds] of heroin", said Viktor Khvorostyan, a bureau chief of the Federal Drug Control Service.

He said officers had detained six Russian and Tajik nationals, all of them members of a criminal gang involved in smuggling drugs to Moscow.

The second drugs stash was discovered in the trunk of an old Moskvich car. The heroin had been stuffed into half-liter plastic bottles, sealed with teats from babies' milking bottles, and covered in garlic to put sniffer-dogs off the scent.

The drugs official said the group had been operating in Moscow for almost a year, and transported batches of heroin in by rail and car once each month.
