CHEBARKUL (Chelyabinsk Region), August 17 (RIA Novosti) - Monday's blast that derailed a train en route from Moscow to St. Petersburg shows that the terrorism problem in Russia has not yet been eliminated, President Vladimir Putin said Friday.
The events "show us once again that not everything has been done to eradicate this threat [terrorism]," Putin said after anti-terrorism exercises in the South Urals involving Russia, China, and four Central Asian countries.
The Nevsky Express hurtled off the rails near Veliky Novgorod on the country's busiest rail line on Monday evening following an explosion that left a crater in the track. Carriages were overturned and dozens were injured.
Several versions of events behind the blast have been put forward by officials, including the involvement of Chechen militants, Russian ultra-nationalists, or simply hooliganism, but no suspects have been charged so far.
Passengers injured in the train crash will receive compensation from a travel insurer totaling up to $10,000 each, according to Russian Railways.
