CHELYABINSK, August 23 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Chelyabinsk Region will be hosting the first national Youth Winter Olympic Games in 2008, said the region's governor, Pyotr Sumin.
"A commission led by Federal Sports Agency head Vyacheslav Fetisov has entrusted the Chelyabinsk Region with hosting most of the Youth Olympics events after considering applications from seven regions. Chelyabinsk has experience in holding major sports events," Sumin added.
In 2005, the region hosted both the summer and the winter national student games.
The governor said the event was slated for February-March 2008, and at least 3,000 young athletes from across Russia were expected to participate.
