Three Russians advance to U.S. Open quarterfinals

MOSCOW, September 4 (RIA Novosti) - On Day 8 of the U.S. Open Grand Slam tennis series running from August 27 to September 9, Russia's Nikolai Davydenko advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament.

The 26-year-old Russian, seeded 4th, advanced to the next stage of the $19.7 million tournament in New York after defeating Hyung-Taik Lee from South Korea in straight sets 6-1, 6-3, 6-4.

Davydenko will now take on Germany's Tommy Haas, seeded 10th, to see who will go through to the semifinals.

In the women's singles former U.S. Open title holder Svetlana Kuznetsova (4) and Anna Chakvetadze (6) both went through to the quarterfinals after defeating Viktoria Azarenka from Belarus 6-2, 6-3, and Tamira Paszek from Austria 6-1, 7-5, in straight sets respectively.

Kuznetsova will take on Agnes Szavay from Hungary in the next round, while Chakvetadze will play Israel's Shahar Peer (18).
