MOSCOW, September 12 (RIA Novosti) - Moscow prosecutors concluded that Kommersant journalist Ivan Safronov committed suicide of his own free will, and have dropped a criminal case on forced suicide, the business daily wrote on Wednesday.

"We have fully conducted all investigations necessary in such circumstances and analyzed their results," central Moscow investigator Anton Serous told Kommersant. "Since the investigation has failed to establish anyone's involvement in Safronov's death, I have come to the conclusion that there is no criminal act involved in this case, and have issued instructions to close it."

Safronov, 51, was found dead in central Moscow on March 2, 2007. Investigators established that he had fallen out of a window of his fifth-floor apartment. Russian prosecutors said they suspected forced suicide, but later found evidence that the journalist had been threatened, blackmailed or forced to commit suicide to be insubstantial.

"During his career, Safronov covered quite sharp themes that were nevertheless broadly discussed by other media outlets," the newspaper quoted prosecutors as saying. "It is unlikely he could have harmed anyone's interests with his work, including the government," they said.

However, Kommersant said Safronov's relatives and colleagues refused to accept the journalist had any motives for taking his own life.
