MOSCOW, September 18 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's 2004 Athens Olympic Champion Alexei Mishin won gold Tuesday at the 2007 Wrestling World Championship in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.
The Russian won gold in the Greco-Roman wrestling weight category under-84 kg (185 lbs) after defeating Brad Vering, a wrestling veteran from the United States.
While Mishin's victory is the first gold for Russia at the tournament, which runs September 17-23, Russia's Nasyr Mankiyev took bronze in the Greco-Roman under-55 kg (121 lbs) weight category on Monday.
The Wrestling World Championship has attracted 850 of the world's best wrestlers, from over hundred countries, to Azerbaijan. The competition will also determine the contestants for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing.
