NEW YORK, September 25 (RIA Novosti) - The Gabala radar Russia leases from Azerbaijan cannot be used by the U.S. in addition to planned U.S. missile defense elements in Central Europe, the Russian foreign minister said Tuesday.
"We cannot be satisfied that... our American colleagues continue to say whether they agree or not to the joint use of the radar, it will only be possible as an addition" to U.S. missile defense elements in Poland and the Czech Republic, Sergei Lavrov told journalists.
The U.S. announced plans in January to deploy interceptor missiles in Poland and a missile defense radar in the Czech Republic as part of its missile shield aimed at countering possible threats from "rogue states" such as Iran and North Korea, which Russia has said would threaten its national security.
