Buenos Aires, September 30 (RIA Novosti) - An Argentinean soccer team has won the 2007 Gay World Cup in Buenos Aires.

Saturday saw Los Dogos overcome the English side, Stonewall, winning 1-0 after a tough match in the Argentinean capital

"We won thanks to the support of our fans, and I hope that this will always be the case. We are happy that we have managed to win the title at last," said Nestor Gamoella, the winning team's trainer.

Gamoella went on to say that the competition had "made a definite contribution in the struggle against the discrimination of people with a non-traditional sexual orientation."

Twenty-eight teams, from the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Ireland, Australia, Chile, Mexico, Argentina and Uruguay took part in the seventeenth Gay World Cup.

The choice of Buenos Aires was no accident. According to experts, around 10% of the city's residents are gay or lesbian, and the city has earned the reputation of "gay capital of Latin America" in recent years.
