CAIRO, October 6 (RIA Novosti) - A total of eight Russian tourists were injured on Saturday in a traffic accident in a tunnel under the Suez Canal, Egypt, a spokesman for the Russian embassy in Cairo said.
A local source reported earlier that a total of nine Russian tourists were injured in the traffic accident that occurred when a bus with some 40 Russian tourists traveling to the Red Sea resort of Sharm el Sheikh collided with a truck carrying cement.
Two Egyptian nationals, a bus driver and a security officer, died at the scene.
Andrei Shevchuk, 17, suffered a serious head injury and underwent a surgery. He has recovered from coma, but still remains in critical condition, the spokesman said.
Another Russian tourist, Dmitry Terentyev, 25, suffered an eye trauma and is now receiving medical treatment.
Other injured tourists are being delivered from a military hospital in Suez, where they had been initially placed, to Cairo, the spokesman added.
Every year a total of 6,500 people die in traffic accidents in Egypt.
