The Mi-8T Hip transport helicopter went down on Friday evening in normal weather conditions, 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the shoreline. The crash occurred during the attempted evacuation of a sick worker from the Khazar-4 offshore drilling platform.

Two on board were employees of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan, and four were crew members.

"The helicopter is at a depth of 20 meters, and lifting equipment is being taken to the site," a spokesman for the oil company told RIA Novosti.

A criminal case has been launched, and a special committee has been set up to investigate the crash.
