GAZA, October 23 (RIA Novosti) - A prominent Palestinian militant has been killed in central Gaza by an Israeli air strike on the car he was traveling in, local radio said on Tuesday.
Mubarak al-Hassanat, 37, was a member of the Salah-ad-Din brigades, the armed wing of the Popular Resistance Committees, a militant organization involved in a number of bombing attacks in the Gaza Strip.
Israeli military said Al-Hassanat had been linked to rocket and mortar attacks against Israel.
Gaza militants have recently intensified their rocket attacks on Israel from the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, and there have been 15 attacks so far this week.
In September, Israel declared the Gaza Strip, with a population of 1.5 million, an "enemy entity," and warned it could launch a large-scale military operation in the enclave, complicating plans for a U.S.-proposed Middle East conference scheduled for November.
