UC RusAl, established in March through a merger of Russian aluminum giants RusAl and SUAL, and Swiss Glencore's alumina assets, signed on Monday a protocol of cooperation with the United Nations. The protocol stipulates measures to improve environmental protection and monitoring and create innovation mechanisms.
"RusAl intends to spend $1.4 billion on implementing environmental projects. We also plan to cut emissions by 33% by 2015," said Alexander Livshits, the company's director for international and special projects.
UC RusAl is a global aluminum leader accounting for about 12.5% and 16% of global production of aluminum and alumina respectively. The company sells its products in 70 countries worldwide and employs 100,000 people in 17 countries, across five continents.
