UC RusAl completes new aluminum plant in south Siberia

KRASNOYARSK, October 31 (RIA Novosti) - United Company RusAl has completed the final phase of a project to build an aluminum plant in south Siberia, a spokesman for the Russian aluminum giant said on Wednesday.

Vladimir Shulekin said the project in the Russian Republic of Khakassia began in November 2004, and the plant produced its first aluminum in December 2006.

"On October 29, we put into operation the last, fourth phase of the plant," Shulekin said.

The plant will have capacity of 300,000 metric tons, or 800 metric tons of metal per day, and investment in the project has topped $750 million. The facility will employ 730 people.

UC RusAl, established in March 2007 through a merger of Russian aluminum giants RusAl and SUAL and Swiss Glencore's alumina assets, accounts for 12% and 15% of the global aluminum and alumina markets, respectively.
