SANTO DOMINGO, October 31 (RIA Novosti) - Tropical storm Noel killed around 30 people during torrential rains and mudslides in the Dominican Republic, before moving onto Cuba, the Bahamas and is due to hit Florida next.

The Dominican Republic has been hardest hit with more than 25,000 people evacuated, over 6,000 buildings and 10 bridges destroyed, and some 39 provinces left without power, the country's national emergency services reported Wednesday.

A state of emergency has been declared in 28 provinces and in the country's capital, Santo Domingo. And with more rain expected local officials said the death toll could rise.

In neighboring Haiti, which was also hard-hit by the downpours, at least eight people were reported to have died so far.

In Cuba around 1,000 homes were damaged and at least 2,000 people evacuated, but no casualties have been reported as double the average rain fell. Some forecasters are predicting a further 15 inches of rain will hit the island and the Bahamas.

Storm warnings have been issued in south Florida, although the storm is reported to be weakening with the biggest threat expected to be beach erosion as high waves hit the coast.

The Atlantic hurricane season usually runs until the end of November. Noel is the 14th storm to be named this season.
