"We conducted an inquiry, found out that they have sold the primary school," the channel quotes local police officer Kuljinder Singh as saying. "Also the money which they received is unaccounted for so we booked them."
The Panchayat, an administrative body, sold the only state-owned school to a local rich resident, Nachater Singh, for 400,000 rupees ($10,200). He renovated the building and now lives there, forcing village children to study in the open air.
"The entire village sold me this school, I participated in the auction, and those who have lodged a complaint were also interested in buying this school," he explained.
The head of the administration, Manjit Kaur, said that it was the collective decision by all villagers to sell the building, and she was not responsible for it alone. ''I didn't sell the school the entire village did so," she said, adding that the investigation was politically motivated.
