Russia-EU aviation summit postponed

BRUSSELS, November 8 (RIA Novosti) - A Russia-EU aviation summit, scheduled for November 16-17 in Moscow, has been postponed, the European Commission spokesman on transport issues, said Thursday.

Russia is the only country that charges a fee for using its air space and the issue has been the subject of continuous haggling between Russia and the EU for years.

Michele Cercone said the decision to postpone the talks, aimed at reaching an agreement on trans-Siberian air routes, had been taken jointly by Russian Transportation Minister Igor Levitin and Jacques Barrot, the EU Commissioner for Transport. The officials cited the need for additional preparations for the event, Cercone said.

But the Russian Transportation Ministry said it had not received any information on the postponement yet.

The spokesman also said the rescheduling was not linked to the dispute with Lufthansa Cargo, a subsidiary of the German air carrier, which has been in dispute with Russia over its use of Astana airport in Kazakhstan as a hub for transit flights. Russia wants Lufthansa to use either Novosibirsk or Krasnoyarsk in Siberia as a hub, but the German carrier is reluctant, citing poor facilities and weather.
