NEW DELHI, December 7 (RIA Novosti) - A total of 100 children got married in a mass ceremony in Rajasthan, northwest India, local media said on Friday.
The ceremony, which was held on Thursday in the city of Ajmer, gathered thousands of local residents, with local authorities being told it was a community meeting. Child weddings are illegal in India.
''If allegations are confirmed, stringent action will be taken against those responsible for the event,'' the Indo-Asian News Service cited a local official as saying.
Such ceremonies are common in India's rural areas.
