U.S. plans to deploy a missile shield in Central Europe threaten Russia-NATO cooperation in missile defense, the Russian foreign minister said on Friday.
BRUSSELS, December 7 (RIA Novosti) - U.S. plans to deploy a missile shield in Central Europe threaten Russia-NATO cooperation in missile defense, the Russian foreign minister said on Friday.

The U.S. plans to deploy a radar in the Czech Republic and a missile defense base in Poland. Russia has said the move would threaten its national security.

Lavrov also said Russia expects to continue consultations on the Conventional Forces in Europe treaty and is convinced that a viable arms control system will be established in Europe.

The foreign ministers of the 26 NATO member states said in a joint statement on Friday that they were concerned with Russia's moratorium on the CFE.

Russia's law suspending its participation in the CFE treaty officially came into force on December 3. The moratorium itself will take effect on December 12.

Moscow considers the original CFE treaty, signed in December 1990 by 16 NATO countries and six Warsaw Pact members, to be discriminatory and outdated since it does not reflect the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact, the breakup of the Soviet Union, or recent NATO expansion.

NATO spokesman James Appathurai said on Friday that NATO and Russia still have differences over the CFE Treaty. Lavrov said there are differences, including on NATO's expansion, but did not cite any other examples.

A source in the Russian delegation said Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice had discussed the CFE issue. On Thursday, Rice said it would be "regrettable" if Moscow made up its mind not to return to the CFE treaty, and called on Russia to revise its position.
